Leyton sits within the London Borough of Waltham Forest in east London, a densely populated and diverse neighbourhood of Victorian terraces, interwar council estates and pockets of newer development. The ward centres on Leyton High Road with a busy mix of independent shops, cafes and street markets; Leyton is served by Leyton station on the Central line, with easy links to Stratford and central London, and lies close to the open spaces of Walthamstow Marshes and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Historically the area shifted from market gardens to rapid Victorian urbanisation and still shows traces of its industrial past around former factories and warehouses. Its cultural life is notably multicultural, with active community groups, grassroots arts and a lively local football culture centred on Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road, while recent years have brought both regeneration and pressures from rising housing costs and changing high streets.
