Kirkby Stephen is a small historic market town in the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness, England, sitting in the Eden Valley beneath the northern flanks of the Pennines. It overlooks the River Eden and sits close to the dramatic limestone and gritstone country of the Yorkshire Dales and the long, wild ridge and dales of Mallerstang and Wild Boar Fell, which makes it a popular base for walkers and nature lovers on routes such as Wainwright’s Coast to Coast.
Historically a market and coaching town, Kirkby Stephen still wears that character with independent shops, a strong farming hinterland and a mix of heritage buildings centred on its parish church. Tourism, outdoor recreation and local services now drive much of the economy while community life revolves around regular markets, small festivals and the legacy of old transport links that underline its role as a local hub between remote dales and the broader Pennine landscape.
