Mallerstang is a narrow, sparsely populated dale in Westmorland and Furness in northern England, carved by the upper reaches of the River Eden and hemmed in by dramatic gritstone fells such as Wild Boar Fell. The landscape is classic Pennine country - steep-sided valleys, upland pastures and moorland - and is popular with walkers, the Pennine Way running nearby and offering big skies and long views rather than busy trails.
Economically it remains principally pastoral, with small-scale sheep farming and a growing reliance on rural tourism, while socially the few hamlets and farms form a tight-knit community. Historic interest is strong for such a small place: the ruins of Pendragon Castle sit by the river near Outhgill, lending the dale a sense of history and local legend that complements its wild scenery.
