Waitby is a tiny, scattered parish tucked into the rolling uplands of Westmorland and Furness in England, sitting on the edge of the Eden Valley beneath the Pennines. The landscape is characterful - drystone walls, rough pasture and limestone outcrops - and a narrow stream runs through the tiny settlement, giving the place a quiet, remote feel while still lying within easy reach of Kirkby Stephen and Appleby-in-Westmorland.
The local economy is traditionally agricultural, dominated by hill sheep farming and a handful of family farms, but the area also draws walkers and nature-lovers. One of the parish’s most interesting features is the nearby Smardale Gill with its dramatic disused railway viaduct and species-rich gill woodlands and meadows, a reminder of the industrial past now reclaimed by wildlife and enjoyed by visitors exploring the lanes and footpaths. The community remains small and close-knit, with stone-built houses and farmsteads that reflect the parish’s long rural history.
