Kirkby Thore is a small village and parish in Westmorland and Furness, set in the rolling limestone countryside of the Eden Valley just off the busy A66. The name is of Norse origin - literally the “church village” of a man called Thore - and the setting gives good views towards the North Pennines, with the surrounding landscape characterised by drystone walls, mixed farms and the scars of past and present quarrying in the local limestone.
The village has an unexpectedly long history: it sits by the site of the Roman fort known as Voreda, and Roman finds have turned up locally. Today its economy is a mix of agriculture, stone-related industry and small local enterprises, while social life centres on the parish church, village hall and a modest community calendar of fairs and events that reflect its rural, close-knit character.
