Patterdale is a small upland parish in Westmorland and Furness, in the heart of the Lake District, England. It occupies the steep-sided valley at the southern end of Ullswater, overlooked by classic fells such as Helvellyn, and is a long-established magnet for walkers, climbers and fell runners.
Traditionally centred on sheep farming with dry-stone walls and stone cottages, the local economy now balances agriculture with tourism - boat services, B&Bs and outdoor guiding around villages like Glenridding and the quieter hamlets of Martindale. A small, close-knit community, the area retains a strong outdoor culture, with mountain rescue presence and easy access to features such as Grisedale Tarn and classic ridge routes.
