Ambleside sits at the northern end of Windermere in Westmorland and Furness, England, inside the Lake District National Park and the wider UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Set among grassy fells such as Loughrigg Fell and close to the cascade at Stock Ghyll Force, the town occupies the site of a Roman fort often identified as Galava.
Once a market and wool town, Ambleside now depends largely on tourism and outdoor pursuits, with independent outdoor shops, cafés and a compact historic centre featuring the little Bridge House and the Armitt Museum. It has a lively community of walkers, climbers and fell runners and serves as a convenient base for exploring the lakes, fells and the cultural history of the region.
