Ulverston is a compact market town in the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness in England, sitting near the edge of the Furness peninsula with views towards Morecambe Bay and the Furness Fells. It’s known for the distinctive Hoad Monument on Hoad Hill, which gives sweeping panoramas over the surrounding countryside and is a local landmark, and for being the birthplace of comedian Stan Laurel - the town’s Laurel and Hardy connections are a popular draw for visitors.
Historically a market and trading centre that benefited from nearby ports and industry in places such as Barrow-in-Furness, today Ulverston has a lively independent high street, a strong community arts scene and a steady flow of tourists heading into the Lake District. Its mix of Georgian streets, local shops, cafés and museums means it punches above its weight culturally while retaining a close-knit, small-town feel.
