Shap is a compact village in the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness, set on the edge of the Pennines where moorland and fells roll down towards the River Lowther. It sits beside the dramatic approaches to Shap Fell and the northern fringes of the Lake District, so the landscape is rugged and popular with walkers and cyclists.
The village is noted for its nearby pink granite quarries and the evocative ruins of Shap Abbey, and it has a memorable transport history thanks to the steep climbs on the West Coast Main Line and the old A6 route. Locally the economy mixes farming and quarrying with tourism, and the small community is centred on village pubs, a parish church and a handful of shops that cater to visitors and hill-goers.
