The civil parish of Shap Rural sits in the uplands of Westmorland and Furness in England, to the east of the Lake District. It’s dominated by open moorland and fells such as Shap Fell, with the distinctive pale granite of the area visible in outcrops and older buildings. The parish is crossed by major transport routes, notably the M6 and the West Coast Main Line, which thread through the otherwise sparsely populated landscape.
Locally the economy is largely farming and quarrying, with a scattering of hamlets, holiday accommodation and hill-walkers attracted to the scenery and proximity to the Lake District National Park. Historic touches include the ruins of Shap Abbey and prehistoric stones in the countryside; socially it retains a small, dispersed community centred on village halls, a few pubs and seasonal tourism.
