Appleby-in-Westmorland is a small market town in the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness, long regarded as the county town of historic Westmorland. It sits on the banks of the River Eden in the broad Eden Valley, roughly between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, which makes it a handy base for walkers and cyclists exploring the surrounding hills and dales.
Appleby retains a compact, historic centre of narrow streets and a market square dominated by the medieval Appleby Castle, and its economy still leans on farming, tourism and local services. Culturally it is best known for the annual Appleby Horse Fair, a large gathering of Gypsy and Traveller communities that brings a strong traditional and social vibrancy to the town each summer.
