Ashton-in-Makerfield is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in north-west England, a few miles east of Wigan town centre. It sits on gently rolling ground close to the ridge around Billinge Hill and the old boundary of historic Lancashire, with easy road and commuter links into both Manchester and Liverpool.
Once a coal‑mining and industrial community, the town still shows that heritage in its character, but today it is largely residential with local shops, light industry and a commuter population. Ashton-in-Makerfield retains a strong community feel, with village‑style high streets, local sports - particularly rugby league - and nearby green spaces and the Beacon on Billinge Hill popular for walks.
