Ashton-in-Makerfield South is a ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, historically part of Lancashire. It sits on the borough's southern edge close to the border with St Helens, combining suburban streets with patches of countryside and local green spaces.
The ward is largely residential with small commercial centres and a strong sense of community; its landscape and social fabric still show the imprint of the North West's industrial past, notably coal mining, while many residents now commute to nearby towns and cities such as Wigan, Manchester and Liverpool. Local life is centred on neighbourhood clubs, churches and sports teams, giving it a compact, community-focused character.
