Portaferry is a compact seaside ward at the tip of the Ards Peninsula in Ards and North Down, Northern Ireland, sitting at the narrow mouth of Strangford Lough. The ferry link across to Strangford and the dramatic tidal currents at the lough’s entrance give the place a strong maritime character: fishing, small‑boat activity and tourism around boat trips and birdwatching are important to the local economy.
Despite its modest size the area has visible heritage in a small coastal castle and traditional streets, and benefits from being adjacent to a protected marine environment, making conservation and outdoor recreation significant to community life; local events, sailing and seafood offerings also contribute to a lively social scene for residents and visitors alike.
