Ards and North Down sits on the east coast of Northern Ireland, taking in the long crescent of the Ards Peninsula, the north shore of Strangford Lough and the coastal edge of Belfast Lough. The district includes seaside towns such as Bangor, Newtownards, Holywood and Donaghadee, and is known for sandy beaches, rugged headlands and attractive harbour villages.
Geographically it's notable for Strangford Lough, a marine conservation and important bird area with busy ferry crossings to Portaferry and a strong boating culture; Mount Stewart and its gardens add a National Trust highlight. Economically the area mixes commuter suburbs, a growing local tourism industry, maritime services, agriculture on the peninsula and pockets of light industry and professional services.
Historically the district has a rich maritime and agricultural past reflected in local festivals, regattas and community events, while contemporary social life balances coastal leisure, commuter living and rural communities. Good road and rail links into Belfast combine with a lively sequence of villages and towns to give the area a relaxed, seaside character with strong local identity.
