The Buchanness Lighthouse perches on the exposed headland of Buchan Ness just outside Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, standing sentinel over the surrounding North Sea. The white-painted tower and adjoining buildings sit among rugged cliffs and skerries, a conspicuous navigational mark and a magnet for seabirds and photographers alike.
Erected in the 19th century to guide coastal and offshore traffic, the light has long been important to the local fishing fleet and, more recently, to vessels serving the offshore energy industry; the keepers and their cottages recall a vanished maritime way of life since automation in the late 20th century. The headland remains popular with walkers, birdwatchers and anyone seeking dramatic sea views and a strong sense of Aberdeenshire’s maritime history.
