Ellon is a market town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, set on the banks of the River Ythan about 16 miles north of Aberdeen. It developed as a milling and market centre beside the river and is known for attractive riverside walks, salmon fishing and easy access to the nearby Ythan estuary and coastal reserve. Today it combines local retail and light industry with a significant commuter population serving the city.
The town has a strong community feel, with sports clubs, independent shops, pubs and regular local events, and the riverside country park and estate gardens are popular with families and birdwatchers. Its mix of historic stone buildings and modern housing reflects the area’s rural heritage and the changes brought by the North Sea oil era and subsequent economic shifts.
