Sanda Island lies off the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is a compact, windswept isle of cliffs, rocky shores and grassy hollows with a distinctive 19th‑century lighthouse marking the approaches; on clear days there are wide sea vistas towards Islay and the surrounding Kintyre coast. Access is by private boat and the island’s small harbour and seasonal dwellings hint at its long use as a fishing, grazing and lighthouse community.
Today the island is prized for wildlife and tranquillity rather than commerce: seabird colonies, including puffins and terns, haul out alongside grey seals and passing cetaceans, making it popular with birdwatchers and naturalists. Historic traces of earlier habitation sit alongside the more recent lighthouse buildings, and the place retains a quietly resilient island culture shaped by remoteness, tourism and conservation interests rather than large‑scale economic activity.
