Dundee City

Council area in Scotland

Coordinates:56.48, -2.96
OS grid ref:NO 40 32

Dundee City is a compact council area on the north bank of the River Tay in Scotland, facing Fife and linked by the Tay Road Bridge. The city is dominated by landmarks such as the volcanic remnant known as the Dundee Law, the coastal suburb of Broughty Ferry and green spaces like Camperdown Park. Historically it was a powerhouse of jute processing and shipbuilding - famously home to the Antarctic vessel RRS Discovery - which shaped its industrial character into the 20th century.

Today Dundee has a strong cultural and creative profile, declared a UNESCO City of Design and boosted by the striking V&A Dundee on the waterfront. Its two universities, University of Dundee and Abertay University, underpin growing sectors in life sciences, digital media and games, while waterfront regeneration has encouraged tourism and tech start-ups. The result is a mix of traditional working‑class neighbourhoods and a youthful, creative scene in a small, easily walkable urban area.
