Eilean Donnan

Island in Highland, Scotland

Coordinates:57.274, -5.516
OS grid ref:NG 88 25
Map of the UK

Eilean Donan sits in the western Highlands where the three sea lochs Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh meet. The small tidal island is linked to the mainland by a picturesque stone bridge and is dominated by a restored medieval castle whose origins go back to the 13th century; the fortress was partly destroyed in 1719 and rebuilt between 1919 and 1932 by Colonel John MacRae‑Gilstrap.

Owned by Clan MacRae, the castle is one of Scotland’s most photographed landmarks and plays a big part in the local economy through tourism, weddings and a small visitor centre. Its dramatic setting, seen across to Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye, plus regular sightings of seals and seabirds, also contribute to its cultural appeal and enduring status as an emblem of the Highlands.
