Isle of Skye sits off the west coast of Scotland in the Highland council area and is renowned for its dramatic geology - the jagged Cuillin mountains, the Trotternish Ridge with the Old Man of Storr, and a coastline of sea lochs, cliffs and isolated sandy bays. The island's main town is Portree, and its economy mixes traditional crofting and fishing with a thriving tourism sector drawn to walking, wildlife, distilleries and local crafts.
Skye retains a strong Gaelic heritage in language, music and place-names and has a layered history from Norse settlement to clan strongholds and sites such as Dunvegan Castle; like much of the Highlands it was affected by the Clearances but today combines small, close-knit communities with seasonal visitors, connected to the mainland by the Skye Bridge.
