Fort Augustus sits at the south‑western end of Loch Ness in the Highland region of Scotland, where the Caledonian Canal threads through a series of locks. The village commands fine views along the Great Glen, is a popular stop for boat trips and walkers on the Great Glen Way, and provides easy access for hillwalking, fishing and kayaking on the loch.
Originally built around an 18th‑century garrison intended to control the Highlands after the Jacobite risings, the settlement includes a notable former Benedictine abbey and a compact high street of cafés, pubs and visitor facilities. The local economy is largely tourism‑led, with a year‑round community that blends Gaelic and Highland traditions while serving day‑trippers from Inverness and beyond.
