North Isles is the northernmost ward of the Orkney Islands in Scotland, consisting of a scatter of low-lying, windswept islands such as Westray, Papa Westray, North Ronaldsay, Sanday and Stronsay. The landscape is a mix of machair, sandy beaches and rocky coastlines, prized for rich seabird colonies and marine life; transport is typically by ferry or short inter-island flights, including the famously brief hop between Westray and Papa Westray.
The culture is strongly Norse-influenced with a long history of crofting, fishing and seafaring; North Ronaldsay is notable for its rare seaweed-eating sheep, and local archaeology and traditions draw visitors in summer. Communities are small and close-knit, with a resilient, community-run spirit supporting tourism, local services and renewable initiatives, while also facing common island challenges such as population retention and access to services.
