Shapinsay is a small, low‑lying island in the Orkney archipelago of Scotland, home to a tight‑knit community of a few hundred people and linked to Kirkwall by a short ferry crossing. Its landscape is dominated by fertile farmland, sheltered bays and machair, making it noticeably greener than some of the wind‑swept northern isles and popular for cycling, coastal walks and wildlife watching.
The island has a long human story from prehistoric remains to Norse influence, most famously the broch at Burroughston and the flamboyant 19th‑century Balfour Castle with its walled garden. Agriculture, small‑scale tourism and community initiatives sustain island life; visitors often come for birdlife, seals and the quiet mix of history and rural Scottish island culture.
