Newcastleton sits in remote Liddesdale in the Scottish Borders of Scotland, tucked beside the River Liddel close to the English border. Founded as a planned village in the 1790s to service local estates and industries, it still bears traces of that industrial past - nearby Riccarton Junction and former mining and forestry workings hint at how the community developed.
Today Newcastleton is a small, active community with shops, a school and community-run facilities and an economy based on farming, forestry and tourism. Surrounded by hills and woods and with easy access to Kielder Forest across the border, it’s a popular base for walking, mountain biking, fishing and other outdoor pursuits, and local shows and events reflect a strong community spirit.
