Ystrad Mynach is a town in the Rhymney Valley within the county borough of Caerphilly, in south Wales. Its Welsh name literally means "monks' valley" and the town expanded rapidly in the 19th century as part of the South Wales coalfield, so Victorian terraces and traces of industrial heritage sit alongside more modern housing; a local railway station on the Rhymney line provides straightforward commuter links to Cardiff and other nearby centres, while rolling hills to the north lead towards the Brecon Beacons.
Today Ystrad Mynach feels like a typical post‑industrial Valleys community with ongoing regeneration, a campus of Coleg y Cymoedd, local shops and sports clubs that sustain a strong community spirit. Bilingual culture, community events and easy access to countryside walks make it a practical base for people working in nearby towns while retaining a distinct local identity.
