Cwmbrân in Torfaen, Wales is a post‑war New Town, designated in 1949, set in the valley of the Afon Llwyd and originally planned to provide housing and industry for overspill from the South Wales valleys. It sits close to Newport and Pontypool and benefits from good road links such as the M4, so it functions both as an employment centre with sizeable industrial and distribution estates and as a commuter town for nearby cities.
The town is known for its large retail heart around the Cwmbran Centre, extensive green corridors, parks and lakes that encourage walking and cycling, and for being built on the footprint of older villages and industrial activity – the nearby Blaenavon industrial landscape hints at that heritage. Socially it’s a mixed, evolving community with ongoing regeneration efforts and local sporting and cultural life centred on facilities like Cwmbran Stadium.
