Tonypandy sits in the steep-sided Rhondda Valley within the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales, close to towns such as Porth. It grew rapidly as a 19th-century coal-mining town on the banks of the Rhondda Fach and retains a dramatic, enclosed valley setting with the A4058 and rail links connecting it to the valleys and to Cardiff.
The town is best known for its role in the mining era and the 1910–11 industrial disturbances commonly called the Tonypandy riots, and that history still shapes local identity with memorials, choirs and community projects marking the coalfields’ legacy. Since pit closures the area has seen economic change and regeneration efforts, with a resilient, close-knit community and continuing cultural interest in Welsh language and valley traditions.
