Holt is a small, predominantly rural parish in Wrexham county borough, perched on the north bank of the River Dee close to the England–Wales border. Its compact village centre features red sandstone buildings and the evocative ruins of Holt Castle, and the river and surrounding farmland make it popular for riverside walks and birdwatching.
Historically the settlement grew up around river crossings and the castle, so its character still reflects a borderland past; today the local economy is largely agricultural with many residents commuting to Wrexham or Chester for work. Community life is centred on a handful of pubs, a village hall and seasonal events, giving it a quiet but socially engaged feel.
