The London Borough of Barnet sits on the northern edge of Greater London, roughly 10–12 miles from central London, and is the capital’s most populous borough. It has a largely suburban, leafy character with a mix of neighbourhoods from affluent villages such as Totteridge and High Barnet (often called Chipping Barnet) to busy town and retail centres around Brent Cross and Edgware; good commuter links by tube, rail and bus make it a popular family borough.
Barnet has notable historical and cultural touches: the 1471 Battle of Barnet was fought near Hadley Green, and the borough contains attractions such as the RAF Museum at Hendon. It was formed in 1965 from the former municipal boroughs of Barnet, Finchley and Hendon, and today combines a diverse local economy of shops, small business and commuters with strong community identities - particularly visible in areas like Golders Green - and plenty of parks and open spaces.
