Dunford is a small, largely rural civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, England, sitting on the edge of the Pennines. The parish contains scattered hamlets such as Dunford Bridge and Carlecotes and is strung along the trans‑Pennine Woodhead Pass, with the remains of the old railway and Woodhead Tunnel nearby; the landscape is a mix of peat moor, upland pastures and reservoirs that attract walkers and cyclists.
Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the area’s economy was traditionally agricultural with links to local transport and textile routes; today it feels very rural, with a small, close‑knit population and a character shaped by outdoor recreation, historic infrastructure and the rhythms of upland farming.
