Silkstone is a village and civil parish in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, set on the fringe of the Pennines amid rolling Yorkshire countryside. The parish includes the neighbouring settlement of Silkstone Common and retains a rural feel of stone-built houses, fields and lanes while sitting within easy commuting distance of Barnsley and Sheffield.
Historically agricultural, the area was transformed in the 19th century by coal mining and is remembered nationally for the 1838 Huskar Pit disaster at nearby Silkstone Common, an event that helped prompt reforms in mining law. Today the village keeps a strong local identity around its parish church, community groups and small businesses, functioning largely as a quiet commuter and rural community with a clearly preserved historic character.
