Wortley is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire. Set on the edge of the South Yorkshire countryside, the area mixes rolling farmland with moorland fringes and a network of footpaths and bridleways popular with walkers and riders; it sits within easy commuting distance of Sheffield and is not far from the Pennines and the Peak District.
A notable feature is the historic country house Wortley Hall, long associated with the Stuart‑Wortley/Wharncliffe family and now used for conferences and community activities. The parish retains a strong rural character with agricultural roots, hints of the region’s industrial past, a handful of local businesses and pubs, and an active community life that keeps the village feel alive.
