Upper Tankersley is a small residential area on the edge of the town of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. It sits close to the village of Tankersley and the M1, giving straightforward road links to Barnsley, Sheffield and Leeds, and occupies a rural–urban fringe with a mixture of post‑war and newer housing alongside fields and footpaths.
Historically the locality shares in the coal‑mining and agricultural heritage of the borough of Barnsley, and the wider parish has a number of older buildings and country houses. Today many residents commute to nearby towns while the neighbourhood keeps a village‑like feel, with local shops, pubs and community groups and easy access to the surrounding countryside for walking and leisure.
