Birmingham

Metropolitan district in England

Coordinates:52.5, -1.89
OS grid ref:SP 07 88

Birmingham is the metropolitan district at the heart of the larger city in the metropolitan county of West Midlands, England. Historically it grew into a powerhouse during the Industrial Revolution as a centre for metalworking, manufacturing and jewellery - the legacy survives in areas such as the Jewellery Quarter and in a dense canal network that predates many of the city’s later Victorian developments.

Today Birmingham is a diverse, outward-looking city with a strong cultural scene (symphony and ballet companies, theatres and a vibrant food culture including the famous Balti area), major retail hubs like the Bullring, and large universities such as the University of Birmingham. Socially and economically it has shifted from heavy industry towards services, education and events, while nearby model villages like Bournville remind visitors of the city’s distinctive industrial and social reform heritage.
