Castle Vale is a large post‑war housing estate and electoral ward on the north‑eastern edge of Birmingham, England, originally built in the 1960s on the site of the former Castle Bromwich aerodrome. Its grid‑style streets once featured a number of high‑rise blocks and are bounded by green corridors and the nearby River Cole, giving the area a mix of suburban housing and open space.
The area became notorious for social and economic problems in the late 20th century but underwent one of the country’s better‑known community‑led regeneration programmes in the 1990s and 2000s, with tower blocks demolished, new homes and a business/retail park created and local services strengthened. Today it is a mixed neighbourhood with ongoing challenges but a strong sense of community, local enterprises and improved facilities compared with its troubled past.
