Shelf and Northowram are neighbouring villages on the eastern edge of the metropolitan borough of Calderdale, sitting on the higher ground above the Calder Valley and a short drive from Halifax and Bradford. The location on sandstone ridges gives both places a village feel with fairly compact centres and panoramic views over the valley below.
Historically tied to textiles, stone quarrying and local coalworking, the settlements still show their industrial past in stone-built terraces, former mill buildings and parish churches; today the economy is more mixed, with many residents commuting to nearby towns while local shops, community groups and annual village events maintain a strong social life. Both villages are popular with walkers and those who want village character within easy reach of West Yorkshire’s larger centres.
