Elland is a small market town in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England, sitting on the south bank of the River Calder at the edge of the Pennines. It’s close to Halifax and Huddersfield and has a compact town centre with steep streets, the historic Elland Bridge and a long industrial legacy from textile mills and engineering works of the 19th century.
Like many former mill towns it experienced industrial decline but now combines light industry, local retail and a commuter population, with active community life centred on a weekly market and local events. There have been regeneration efforts and campaigns to reopen Elland railway station, while its riverside location and easy access to the Calderdale countryside make it a base for walkers and day‑trippers as well as a town with a distinctive local identity.
