Totternhoe is a small village in Central Bedfordshire, England, tucked against the chalk escarpment of the Chiltern Hills and just beneath the skyline of the Dunstable Downs. The local landscape is dominated by steep chalk slopes and a notable disused quarry, Totternhoe Quarry, now a nature reserve and SSSI celebrated for its species-rich chalk grassland, geological exposures and fine views over the Vale of Aylesbury.
Historically the village is best known for Totternhoe Stone, a hard chalky limestone quarried here from medieval times and used in important buildings such as Westminster Abbey. The knoll above the village carries earthworks of an old castle and the settlement retains a strong rural character with farming, a close‑knit village community and the kind of local amenities and events typical of small Bedfordshire villages, while many residents commute to nearby towns for work.
