Central Bedfordshire sits in the heart of Bedfordshire in the East of England, covering a wide swathe of largely rural countryside and smaller urban centres. Created as a unitary authority in 2009, it contains a mix of market towns such as Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable and Ampthill alongside many villages and hamlets.
The landscape ranges from the Greensand Ridge and the north-western foothills of the Chilterns to the river valleys of the Great Ouse and Ivel. Historic country houses and estates around Woburn, with their abbey and safari park, sit beside medieval market squares and evidence of traditional trades such as brick-making and coaching inns.
Economically the area is a mix of agriculture, light industry, distribution and a substantial commuter population, helped by good road and rail links to the M1 and London. Social life combines country pursuits, local festivals and community activity with ongoing housing growth on town edges, giving a blend of rural character and suburban change.
