Barthomley is a small, mainly rural parish in Cheshire East sitting on the county border with Staffordshire. It comprises a scattering of farms and hamlets linked by narrow lanes, and benefits from proximity to larger centres such as Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent, which makes it popular with commuters while retaining a quiet, agricultural character.
The parish punches above its weight historically and culturally: the medieval St Bertoline's Church (one of the few dedicated to that saint) and a number of timber-framed cottages give it a distinctive feel, and it is marked by a notorious Civil War incident in 1643. Today the community is small and close-knit, with local events around the village nucleus and an economy shaped by farming alongside nearby light industry and commuter links.
