Staffordshire sits between the Midlands' industrial heart and rolling countryside, with a mix of urban centres and rural market towns; the county town is Stafford and the larger conurbation is Stoke-on-Trent, historically known as the heart of the pottery industry.
Its landscape ranges from heathland and pine woods on Cannock Chase to the higher moorland of the Staffordshire Moorlands, which meet the western edge of the Peak District, and is threaded by waterways such as the River Trent and the Trent and Mersey Canal. Visitors also enjoy the cathedral city of Lichfield and plenty of walking and cycling routes.
Economically the county blends traditional manufacturing - most famously The Potteries and firms rooted in places like Burslem - with farming, tourism and light industry. Culturally it has a strong local identity, active festivals and community life, and national points of interest such as the National Memorial Arboretum, giving the county a varied social character.
