Audley is a large village in the borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, in north Staffordshire. It sits on a ridge overlooking the Cheshire Plain with views towards the Peak District on clear days. The village has medieval roots and gives its name to the Audley family, who were local lords in the Middle Ages; later it grew as part of the North Staffordshire coalfield, with mining shaping its layout and character.
Today Audley is largely a residential and commuter community with a compact high street of shops, pubs and community facilities, while many people work in nearby Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme. A strong local identity remains, expressed through clubs, village events and churches, and the surrounding countryside and footpaths make it popular with walkers.
