Parkgate sits on the western edge of the Wirral Peninsula in Cheshire West and Chester, overlooking the wide mudflats of the Dee Estuary with long views across to North Wales. Once a busy river port for Chester, the village’s character was reshaped when the estuary silted up, leaving a distinctive foreshore where boats now sit on the mud at low tide and visitors stroll the Victorian promenade.
Today Parkgate is best known for its birdlife and coastal walks - many people come via nearby Burton Mere Wetlands - and for its mix of Georgian and Victorian houses, independent cafés, pubs and galleries. It feels like a small, somewhat affluent commuter and tourist community with a strong conservation-minded identity and a steady flow of day-trippers from Chester and surrounding towns.
