Carlyon Bay in Cornwall, England is a gently curving sandy bay just to the east of St Austell and close to the harbour village of Charlestown. The beach is backed by low cliffs and dunes and at low tide the sand stretches widely; the South West Coast Path runs nearby, giving open views across St Austell Bay towards the English Channel.
The bay sits on the edge of Cornwall’s china‑clay country, so industrial heritage and changing coastal processes have helped shape the local landscape and economy. In recent decades it has been the focus of redevelopment and planning debate as leisure, housing and tourism interests compete with local community use; it remains popular for walks, swimming and sunsets while being quieter than many busier Cornish resorts.
