Burtholme is a small, rural civil parish in the historic county of Cumberland in north‑west England, sitting on the low, flat expanse of the Solway Plain close to the salt marshes of the Solway Firth. The parish is characterised by a scattering of farms and hamlets rather than a single large village, and its landscape and settlement pattern reflect the agricultural traditions of the area.
Locally there are echoes of the Roman frontier and the nearby line of Hadrian's Wall, and the coast and marshes make the area attractive to walkers and birdwatchers. Economically it remains largely driven by farming, with a number of residents commuting to the city of Carlisle for work; social life tends to centre on small community hubs such as the parish church, village hall and seasonal local events.
