Rockcliffe is a small, low‑lying parish on the north shore of the Solway Firth, a few miles west of Carlisle and beside the mouth of the River Eden. The landscape is dominated by tidal marshes and expanse of mudflats that attract large numbers of wildfowl and waders, and the wide, exposed views across the Solway to Scotland are a defining feature.
Traditionally agricultural, the community combines farming with some commuting into Carlisle and a modest amount of coastal recreation and birdwatching. Its setting close to the Roman frontier around Carlisle gives the locality a long history, while the small villages retain a quiet, village‑centred social life rather than any large commercial hub.
