Wetheral in Cumberland is a compact riverside village and civil parish on the south bank of the River Eden, a few miles west of Carlisle. The village sits beside a wooded river gorge with attractive walks through Wetheral Woods, making it a popular spot for walkers, anglers and birdwatchers; the landscape gives a strong sense of rural Cumbria coupled with easy access to the city.
Historically the village is known for the ruins of an Augustinian house and other medieval remnants, notably Wetheral Priory and the nearby St Mary's Church, while today it functions largely as a residential and commuter community with a modest local economy supported by tourism, a handful of shops and pubs, and an active village life.
