Wetheral is a largely rural ward on the banks of the River Eden, a short drive east of Carlisle in Cumberland, England. The area combines small villages and farmland with good transport links - the local station on the Tyne Valley Line gives easy commuter access to Carlisle and points east - and plenty of riverside and country walking for residents and visitors.
Locally the ward is noted for its historic remains and village character: the ruins of a medieval priory and an old stone bridge give Wetheral a strong sense of history, while agricultural activity and small-scale local businesses still shape the economy. Community life tends to be village-centred, with parish events, clubs and conservation-minded groups active in preserving the rural landscape and built heritage.
