Mid Devon sits at the heart of Devon in south‑west England, a largely rural area of rolling farmland, hedgerow-lined lanes and wooded river valleys. The River Exe and the Grand Western Canal thread through the district, providing popular walking and cycling routes, while the backdrop of Exmoor and Dartmoor is never far away.
Its principal towns are Tiverton, Crediton and Cullompton, and the local economy is a mix of agriculture, food processing, light engineering and small businesses. Many residents commute to larger centres such as Exeter and Taunton, using the M5 corridor and Tiverton Parkway railway station for connections.
The area has a strong historic identity, built on the medieval wool and cloth trade; Tiverton still has a traditional pannier market and notable historic buildings, while Crediton is famous as the birthplace of St Boniface. Social life is centred on market days, village halls, local clubs and seasonal events, and tourism linked to walking, cycling and canal-side recreation plays an important role.
